about

My friend Max always told me that my first two albums would've been better as one combined album, but by the time he'd told me that I'd already released them and there wasn't a whole lot I could do. Four years later, I think I've finally come around.

This is not a greatest hits record, by any means. It's a snapshot of where I was at from 2005 to 2007, from when I started writing "Brontosaurus Breakfast" to when I released "Fool's Gold." A whole lot of wordplay with the occasional bombshell, a whole lot of wanderlust and homesickness (really, two sides of the same coin). A whole lot of hooks, but not much else. The subtext of all this is that I should've released one album during this time period instead of the two. This is the album I would've released had I exercised a little more quality control.

The songs I've included here are the ones that I still play off of these albums at my shows; the ones that have either taken on new significance now that I've aged (but not much), or just songs that I still like playing. The two albums that off of which I've culled these songs were essentially me teaching myself how to produce records, how to play guitar, and how I write songs. The songs here are the ones where I came closest to getting it right, though I don't know if I've gotten it right yet.

I played, wrote and recorded everything you hear, except Seth Rosetter helped me record "Uninvited Guests." He, along with our friends Aaron and Elliot, generally changed the way I think about pop music. Max also gave me the idea to combine the first two albums, though I don't know if I picked the songs he would've. Maybe I'll ask him. Alix Sophia took the picture of me in Minneapolis in the Fall of 2006 at Rosmary's house on one of my better days (or one of my worse ones, depending on your politics).
